Why have a wood burner?

Cosy nights in, and lower bills

Cosy nights in, with the added comfort that you are reducing your energy bills and increasing your house value. Wood fuel is often cheaper than other heating options, although the price varies considerably.

It is a low-carbon option too. The carbon dioxide emitted when wood is burned is the same amount that was absorbed over the months and years that the plant was growing, so the process is sustainable as long as new plants continue to grow in place of those used for fuel. There are some carbon emissions caused by the cultivation, manufacture and transportation of the fuel, but as long as the fuel is sourced locally, these are much lower than the emissions from fossil fuels.

Expert advice

Having been a firefighter for 14 years, it opened my eyes as to how many fires are chimney fires. To prevent this, make sure you use a HETAS Engineer and regularly maintain your chimney and stove.

Frequently asked questions

How often should my chimney be swept?

At least once every 12 months when you burn wood or smokeless fuels, and twice a year if you use your stove heavily, for example as your main source of heat.

Do I need a HETAS registered installer?

A stove installation must comply with building regulations. Using a HETAS registered installer means the work is certificated and notified for you, without a separate building control application.

What wood should I burn?

Dry wood at 20% moisture content or below. Buy a moisture meter. Wet wood damages the liner and stove, builds deposits in the flue and blackens the glass.

Can you fit a stove where there is no chimney?

Yes. We install internal and external twin-wall system chimneys, so a stove can go in a room that has never had a fireplace.

How long does an installation take?

Installation can take anywhere from one to five days, depending on the work required. A straightforward stove replacement may be completed quickly, while installations involving fireplace alterations, a new hearth, chimney work or a new flue system can take longer. We’ll discuss the likely timescale with you following your home survey.
